TL;DR

Plenty of UK crisps are vegan, including Walkers Ready Salted, Walkers Salt and Vinegar, Skips, Hula Hoops Original, most Popchips flavours and several Kettle Chips varieties. The catch is that not all flavours from a brand are vegan, even when the name suggests otherwise. Walkers Roast Chicken is vegan. Monster Munch is not. This post covers every major brand with the verified facts.

selection of vegan crisps

Being vegan does not mean giving up crisps. It does mean spending longer than you should in the snack aisle reading the back of packets. Some of the most obviously named crisps turn out to be vegan. Some that sound like they should be absolutely are not.

This guide cuts through all of that. Every brand and flavour listed here has been checked against current ingredient information from manufacturer websites and verified sources. Not guessed. Not assumed. Checked.

A quick note before we start: many UK crisps are made in factories that also handle milk. Most vegans are comfortable with this, but if you have a severe dairy allergy rather than an ethical objection to dairy, always check the allergen information on the pack.

What Makes a Crisp Vegan?

A crisp is vegan if it contains no animal-derived ingredients. In practice, the main things to watch for on UK crisp packets are milk and its derivatives, which show up as lactose, whey, whey powder, dried milk, milk solids, cheese powder and butter extract. Occasionally you will also see egg derivatives or pork-based flavourings.

The good news is that UK food labelling law requires allergens to be listed in bold, so milk is always easy to spot. If the back of the packet has no bold allergens and no obviously animal-based ingredients, you are almost certainly fine.

Walkers Vegan Crisps

Walkers is the biggest crisp brand in the UK, and a decent chunk of its range is vegan. The surprising part is which flavours make the cut and which do not. If you want to browse the full Walkers range we stock, you can find it on our Walkers crisps category page.

These Walkers flavours are vegan:

These Walkers flavours are NOT vegan:

The broader lesson with Walkers is that the flavouring name tells you almost nothing. Check the pack.

Monster Munch: Not Vegan

Monster Munch deserves its own section because the answer catches people out. All three flavours โ€” Pickled Onion, Roast Beef and Flamin’ Hot โ€” contain milk derivatives. Despite the names suggesting otherwise, none of them are vegan.

If you are shopping for vegan snacks and reach for Monster Munch because the pickled onion flavour sounds like it should be fine, put it back. The milk is in the flavouring. You can see the full range we stock on our Monster Munch category page.

Hula Hoops Vegan Flavours

Hula Hoops is a split case. Some flavours are vegan, several are not. Here is the breakdown.

Vegan Hula Hoops flavours:

Not vegan:

The simple rule: Original and Salt and Vinegar are your safe options. Everything else needs a label check. See our Hula Hoops category page for what we have in stock.

Skips

Skips are vegan. All of the plant-based ingredients. Despite tasting like prawn cocktail, there are no prawns anywhere in the recipe. The flavour comes from a combination of yeast extract, dried onion, citric acid, dried tomato and spices.

The only caveat is that Skips are not officially certified vegan, only certified vegetarian. This is because they are made in a factory that also processes milk. The product itself contains no animal ingredients. Most vegans are fine with this distinction.

You can grab a box from our Skips product page.

Popchips

Several Popchips flavours are confirmed vegan, including:

Popchips are also lower in fat than most fried crisps as they are popped rather than fried. Worth knowing if that matters to you. We stock the BBQ variety if you want to try them โ€” see our Popchips page.

Kettle Chips

Kettle Chips has a strong vegan offering and even produces a dedicated vegan box. Confirmed vegan flavours include:

See our Kettle Chips page for available stock.

Pipers Crisps

Pipers is a premium British crisp brand that produces several vegan-friendly options. Their plain and lightly seasoned varieties are generally safe. Confirmed vegan flavours include Lye Cross Farm Cheddar and Onion (which despite the name is vegan), Anglesey Sea Salt and Jalapeno and Dill. See our Pipers Crisps category page for what we have in stock.

Tyrrells

Tyrrells produces a wide range of vegan-friendly crisps. Their root vegetable variety โ€” made from parsnip, carrot and beetroot with sea salt โ€” contains only vegetables, sunflower oil and sea salt. No animal ingredients. Several of their potato crisp flavours are also vegan. A solid premium option for vegan snacking.

Golden Wonder

Golden Wonder has a number of vegan flavours including Ready Salted and Salt and Vinegar. Their Wheat Crunchies range, which sits under the Golden Wonder group, includes Crispy Bacon and Worcester Sauce flavours that are confirmed vegan. See our Golden Wonder category page for available stock and our post on whether Golden Wonder still exists for a bit of background on the brand.

Wheat Crunchies

Wheat Crunchies Crispy Bacon and Worcester Sauce flavours are both vegan despite the bacon name. Worth picking up if you have not tried them. The crunchy texture is unlike most other crisps on the market. Browse the range on our Wheat Crunchies category page.

Space Raiders

Space Raiders are confirmed vegan across all three of the main flavours: Beef, Pickled Onion and Spicy. Like several others on this list they are made in a factory that handles milk, so there is a cross-contamination caveat, but the products themselves contain no animal ingredients. We cover the full range on our Space Raiders page.

Nik Naks

Nik Naks is a grey area. The Nice N Spicy flavour contains milk derivatives and is not vegan. The Rib N Saucy and Scampi N Lemon flavours are similarly complicated. Always check the current pack as the Nik Naks recipe has changed more than once. See our Nik Naks category page and check the allergen information on any pack before buying.

Discos

Discos Salt and Vinegar is vegan. The Cheese and Onion flavour is not. The flat round shape makes them one of the more distinctive crisps on the market and the salt and vinegar variety is worth picking up. See our Discos category page for current stock.
