Quarterbacks are back. Golden Wonder’s cheeseburger flavoured corn snacks, shaped like little American football players mid star jump, are on UK shelves again this September in a bright blue 50p price marked bag. The bag says baked never fried, carries the new “More Punch Per Crunch” branding, and from retailer listings it looks like the recipe has been tweaked too. Here is what we know, what has changed and where to get them.
If you grew up with Quarterbacks in a school tuck shop or a corner shop, you will probably remember them as a cheap, slightly odd snack that sat somewhere between a crisp and a cheese puff. For a few years they got genuinely hard to find, and plenty of people (us included, if we are honest) assumed they had gone for good. They have not. We picked up the bag pictured in this post off a shop shelf, sat just below the Mini Cheddars, and it is very much the real thing.
Grab These Too…
What Quarterbacks actually are
Quarterbacks are a baked corn snack made by Golden Wonder, a brand now owned by Tayto Group. Golden Wonder itself dates back to 1947, when an Edinburgh baker called William Alexander started frying sliced potatoes in the afternoons once his baking was done, naming the crisps after the Golden Wonder potato variety. The “est 1947” on the new bag is a nod to that.
The snack is a puffed corn shape, loosely modelled on an American football player, with a cheeseburger seasoning. Golden Wonder has long sold them as an American style cheeseburger snack, and older retail listings describe them as baked rather than fried, which the new pack repeats right on the front.
They sit in a small family of Golden Wonder corn snacks that most people only ever see in newsagents and independents. Tayto lists Quarterbacks alongside Spicy Bikers, Tangy Toms and Awesome Oinks in that range, all in price marked packs. If you have ever bought a bag of Awesome Oinks or Tangy Toms, Quarterbacks are the cheeseburger cousin.
Did Quarterbacks ever really go away
This is where we owe readers a correction. Our older Quarter Backs guide said they had been discontinued and replaced by Barbecue Strikers. That was wrong. Tayto Group’s own Golden Wonder page continued to list Quarterbacks as part of its price marked range, so the product never officially left the lineup.
What did happen is that they became much harder to find. Some wholesalers appear to have swapped them out for other corn snacks: one trade supplier’s web page with “quarterbacks” in its address now shows Golden Wonder BBQ Strikers, priced 30p or 2 for 50p, which is probably how the replacement story got started. If your local shop stopped stocking them, from where you were standing they had disappeared. We have updated the old guide to reflect this.
So “back” here means back on the shelf in a new pack at a new price, and in a lot of shops, back for the first time in years.
What has changed with the new bag
The most obvious change is the packaging. Golden Wonder has been rolling a new look across its whole range. Tayto said the redesign was built around the brand’s More Punch Per Crunch message, with a simpler Golden Wonder logo and brighter colours, and in early 2026 it extended that new look across its price marked snack range. Quarterbacks now have a bold blue bag with the white and red Golden Wonder logo, an American football graphic and “Cheeseburger Flavour” in red lettering.
The price has moved too. The bag we bought carries a 50p RRP flash with “Great Value” next to it. For years Quarterbacks were one of those 2 for 50p snacks, and our own old product listing sold a box of 36 at that multi buy rate. 50p a bag is still cheap by current snack prices, but it is a noticeable jump if you remember the old deal.
Has the recipe changed
It looks like it, though we want to see the back of a few more bags before calling it definite. The older ingredient list, as published on our own product page, had wheat flour and rusk in the cheeseburger seasoning, plus a fat powder containing palm oil and lactose. A current listing for the 27g bag shows maize, rapeseed and sunflower oils, and a cheeseburger seasoning with whey powder, rice flour, salt, flavouring, onion powder, yeast powder, monosodium glutamate, cheese powder and paprika extract for colour.
The noticeable differences are rice flour in place of wheat flour, no rusk and no palm oil. That listing no longer shows any wheat ingredient. That does not make them gluten free, since Golden Wonder does not label them as such and we cannot speak for cross contamination, so anyone avoiding gluten should read the pack and check with Tayto. Both the old and new ingredient lists contain milk, so they are not suitable for vegans or anyone avoiding dairy.
Pack size
Quarterbacks have come in a few sizes over the years. One older wholesale listing sold them as a box of 36 25g bags, and multipacks used smaller 16g bags. The current case listing is 30 bags of 27g each. Check the weight printed on your bag, as older stock may still be kicking about in some shops.
What do Quarterbacks taste like
We are holding off on a proper verdict until we have eaten our way through a few bags of the new version, since a recipe change can shift the flavour. What we can say is what the snack sets out to be: a light, crunchy puffed corn shape with a savoury cheese and onion heavy seasoning that is meant to suggest a cheeseburger. It is closer to a cheese puff than a potato crisp, and the texture is airy rather than dense.
If you liked the old ones, the new ones are clearly the same idea in the same shape. We will update this section once we have done a proper side by side.
Where to buy Quarterbacks
The 50p price marked bag is aimed squarely at convenience stores, corner shops and independents, which is where Golden Wonder’s corn snacks have always sold best. Tayto has said as much about the format, pointing to Circana figures showing price marked packs make up 81% of snack sales in the convenience channel. Supermarkets are less reliable for this kind of snack, so your local shop is the best bet.
Online, you have a few options:
- Search Amazon for Golden Wonder Quarterbacks singles or small bundles
- Go for a full box of Quarterbacks if you want the case price rather than paying per bag
- Mix things up with a Golden Wonder corn snacks box that includes Oinks, Toms and Bikers alongside Quarterbacks
Buying by the case makes sense if these are a regular lunchbox or snack cupboard item. At 50p a bag in shops, a box of 30 works out at ยฃ15 at RRP, so compare the online case price against that before you order.
Quarterbacks and the rest of the Golden Wonder corn snack range
Quarterbacks are one of a handful of shaped corn snacks Golden Wonder still makes, and they all follow the same format: a small bag, a single strong flavour and a pocket money price.
Awesome Oinks are the bacon flavoured ones shaped like little pigs, and Golden Wonder has recently added them in a ยฃ1 price marked sharing bag. Tangy Toms are the tomato flavoured ones. Spicy Bikers bring a bit of heat, and they come in the smaller 35p or 2 for 60p grab bag format. Quarterbacks are the only cheeseburger option in the family.
If you are into this style of snack more generally, our Golden Wonder category page covers the full range, and our box of 36 Quarter Backs product page has the older pack details for comparison. Why cheap nostalgic snacks keep coming back
Golden Wonder has been fairly open about leaning into classic flavours and value. Tayto’s marketing director Matt Smith has said consumers keep preferring familiar flavours like cheese and onion, bacon and BBQ, and that people look for comfort in familiar snacks when times are tough. A 50p bag of something you ate at school fits that brief almost perfectly.
It also helps that price marked packs give shoppers a clear signal of what they will pay. Smith has argued that convenience shoppers worry about being overcharged for shopping locally, and price marked packs reassure them. Quarterbacks have always lived in that world, and the new bag puts the 50p front and centre.

PepsiCo has confirmed its 2026 Christmas crisps and snacks range, and it is built almost entirely on comebacks rather than brand new…
The bottom line
Golden Wonder Quarterbacks are back on shelves in a new blue 50p bag, still cheeseburger flavoured, still baked, and still shaped like tiny American football players. They were never formally discontinued, but they had become hard enough to find that most people thought they had gone. The new version appears to have a revised recipe using rice flour instead of wheat flour and a 27g bag, so check the pack if allergens matter to you, and check your local corner shop before paying delivery online.
